Learn How To Build Your Own Wind Turbine

Energy conservation is important to all of us. Increased energy consumption only means that we deplete our resources for fuel that much faster. One viable alternative is wind energy. Some people are building their own wind turbines to cut their energy costs.

What is a wind turbine?

It is often called a wind generator or can be called a windmill. It has the same basic principles as a windmill when they were first used. A wind turbine is the structure that collects the kinetic energy of the winds that blow across it and turns it into electricity for the home.

The basic parts of a wind turbine are:wind turbine

• Rotor blades
• Generator
• Tower
• Wiring

The first thing to map out before building a wind turbine is if there is enough room in your back yard for the job. The tower has to stand where the winds are unobstructed by any other structure such as your home, trees, or other buildings. Some stand as high as seven or eight feet or more depending on the area. The winds are stronger the higher you go in the atmosphere.

The generator is a DC motor that uses magnets to turn the kinetic energy into electricity. Ideally, your motor will produce low RPM with high voltage and high current. The system can be operated with or without a battery backup.

The rotor blades catch the winds. Most windmills have at least three rotor blades for balance. You need a stable structure so that no energy is lost from the rattling of an unbalanced wind turbine.

What will it cost to build a wind turbine?

The cost of a wind turbine varies. You can purchase kits online at www.solarwindenergys.com. You can acquire the parts for around $200 or less. Old satellite towers can be used for your wind turbine. As for the blades, PVC pipe can be used.

You can get your materials at a discount at scrap yards, on eBay, or from a friend. You’ll also need to clear a place so that the tower is anchored deep into the ground and cemented in place. You’ll spend some money on additional labor if you need it to prepare the area.

What you spend on extras will still be less than what you would spend on a prefabricated system. In fact, your wind turbine will begin to pay for itself almost immediately with reduced electricity bills. If you have the time and energy, building a wind turbine will cut your dependence on fossil fuels and create a renewable energy source.
