Harness the Sun to Create Solar Electricity

The earth needs a new form of energy. Our dependence on fossil fuels will be at an end sooner than we’d like to believe. It has become imperative that scientists work to find sources of fuel that are renewable and stable for the future of our planet. Solar electricity is a source we will be able to count on in the future.

Solar electricity is another name for solar energy. Electricity is created from the energy that is emitted from the sun. It is not a new form of energy. People have experimented with solar generated electricity for many years. But, not until recently was it seriously considered as a major source of energy to eventually replace our dependence on fossil fuels.

It also bears mentioning that with alternate forms of energy there is a responsibility to conserve energy. Energy conservation is also nothing new. Conserving energy lowers the amount that each household and business needs to consume on a daily basis. This includes:

• Turning off lights and televisions when not in use
• Keeping thermostats at a constant temperature
• Sealing doors and windows

Solar energy is a renewable resource but conservation of energy resources keeps the price low for the ordinary person like us who need a break on energy bills.

How Solar Energy Becomes Electricity

How is solar electricity produced? Well, here is a down and dirty on the mechanics of it all. The sun gives off an incredible amount of solar energy and radiation that hits the earth on a daily basis. Much of the harmful radiation is eliminated within the layers of our upper atmosphere so we aren’t burnt to a crisp. All of this solar energy is just begging to be utilized.

For years people have been making use of some of that solar energy. Solar panels are used to collect the energy given off by the sun. Each solar panel contains smaller cells called solar or photovoltaic cells. The semi-conductive material used inside these solar cells is like that used to create microchips.

Silicon is the most likely material used to make photovoltaic cells. When the sunlight hits the solar cells it stirs up an electrical charge. Electrons are knocked free from their atoms and electricity is produced.

This is not the end of the story. The electricity that is produced by solar power is DC, or direct current. This means that the power of the current produced is directly in proportion to the amount of sunlight received by the solar cells. On very hot sunny days, the current is stronger. Solar systems use an inverter to change from DC to AC which is what most household appliances require.

Is Solar Electricity Viable

If you ride through a neighborhood, you won’t see a group of solar panels on every roof. There is still the matter of the expense associated with solar electricity. Putting up solar panels is just the first step. An entire solar system turns that energy into electricity. These systems can cost as much as $10,000 or more.

But, there is hope. Solar panels are usually those rigid arrays made up of modules that contain thirty to forty cells. Depending on how much energy you need, the number of solar panels can go from two to twenty. More flexible photovoltaic cells can be attached to street signs and roofing shingles for a sleeker, more aesthetic look.

As the use of solar electricity becomes more mainstream, scientists and engineers will work to streamline the process. Individual homes utilize solar electricity either in conjunction with their energy grid or without one if they live in remote areas. But, energy grids are still in use widespread.

It is not easy to switch over to another form of energy. What proponents of solar electricity are asking is that more money is funneled into getting a national and global solar energy project in motion that can take over when fossil fuels wane. The big money makers need to get behind solar energy to make it work on a global scale.

Solar electricity is viable for our future. Some scientists even toyed with the idea of collecting more energy with solar collectors above the earth, but that is very much a future event given our current technology.

Solar panels can produce enough electricity to power our homes. Harnessing solar power on a grand scale can supply an entire country of homes. Right now we face cost and technology issues but solar energy is the wave of the future.
