Wind Generated Electricity – The Natural Alternative Energy

The world is on the hunt for alternative forms of energy. Fossil fuels have always been useful to us but at a high cost—endangering the environment. One type of alternative energy is wind energy.

Home owners can generate electricity using wind energy. The kinetic energy of the wind is harnessed to produce electricity using a wind turbine, also called a wind generator. Wind power has been in use for centuries, but we have given it an upgrade to be useful for our modern lifestyles.

How Does Wind Power WorkWind Generated Electricity

The wind creates energy. When it blows, the force behind the winds can be a mild breeze or hurricane force. Somewhere in the middle is a large range in which we can use the wind’s power as a replacement for fossil fuel generated electricity.

The wind turbine resembles a fancy high-tech windmill. It has three blades with a nose that forms a rotor. Attached to the rotor is a gearbox. A DC motor is housed in the gearbox. It turns the kinetic energy into electricity.

The wind hits the blades. The rotor is mounted on a shaft that allows it to turn in all direction to capture the winds. The blades spin and the energy is transferred to the motor. Using magnets, electricity is created.

The electricity is transferred via wiring to a battery (if you are using a battery wind generator system) that stores the electricity. When needed, the electricity continues to flow along the circuit until it reaches the house where it flows where it is needed to power appliances and whatnot in the home.

What Is The Cost

Wind generator systems for the home can be quite expensive. An initial investment around $20,000 is not unheard of. Besides the system, one would need to have a place cleared and dug in the yard to mount the wind generator tower. unless you have a buddy with an earth mover, this adds to the cost of the project.

People who are good with their hands and mechanical things can purchase a DIY kit and put together their own wind generator for far less than it costs to buy one. But that takes know-how and dedication to see the job through to the end. Many homeowners have done it and are in love with their system. It has paid for itself many times over already.

What Are The Benefits

Wind generated electricity is good for homes that are too remote to be tied to an electricity grid. Even if you don’t live in a high wind area, most wind generator systems can operate an average size home with average wind speeds of 10-12 miles per hour.

Just like solar power systems, wind generated electrical systems can use battery backups to store excess energy for use when winds are low. And, wind power is a renewable resource.
