Making a Home Windmill Made Easy

If you are interested in alternative energy options, making a home windmill is something worth considering. Windmills used to be used mostly for pumping water but now they are used more and more for generating electricity. Using the power of the wind, the turning blades of a windmill can harness energy, store it in a battery and use it for powering a home, office or more.

The windmill is a perfect energy alternative, especially in rural areas with wide open spaces where the land can be sued for multiple purposes. It is time to take a serious look at our limited resources and consider other viable options. Windmills provide such an option, maybe not in cities, but in many other areas of the country.

Locating Your Windmill

There are two pre-requisites to know about when considering a windmill. They are:

* The windmill must be located on at least an acre of land in order for the blades to be able to do their job effectively.
* The wind speed in the area being considered should average 11 miles an hour or more. If a windmill is located near a multi-story building or other tall structure, it may block the wind and thus create a situation where the windmill cannot operate at optimum capacity. It is essential to actually measure the wind speed over a period of time to determine if the location is suitable.

Parts of a Windmill

A windmill is made up of the following components:

* A Base – which provides the foundation for the rest of the structure
* A Tower -the tower is the part of the windmill that extends it up high enough to reach the wind and leave sufficient room for the blades to turn. They are usually made of poly-vinyl chloride.
* The Blades – The blades are usually made of wood or plastic and are the part of the windmill that actually captures the wind energy.
* The Shaft – The blades are joined to the tower by the shaft allowing them to move freely as they turn.

Setting Up the Windmill

If you are making a home windmill you will want to consider one of the many windmill kits that are now available or you may prefer to make your own. Either way it is a good idea to consult with a professional or someone in the field who can help you choose either the right windmill or the right parts for your particular needs.
