Cervantes. Windmills have been around a long time. They have been used to power wells, feed grinders, and create electricity for farm homes. For people living in remote locations, windmills kept their homes from being in the dark at night or dependent on lanterns.
The wind is a powerful entity. Wind in the form of storms, tornadoes, and really windy days provide power like we have never seen. The wind that blows gently through our hair on a fall day can push a splinter into a telephone pole during a tornado. That type of power is too awesome to ignore.

Wind power has been utilized in other countries for longer than in America, but we are catching on. In remote areas of the world, wind energy is used to power homes that have to operate off of the grid. The grid we are referring to is the power grid that connects home in an area together with power plants that supply them energy in the form of electricity. This electricity is provided through the use of fossil fuels.
What is Wind Energy?
The wind blows in currents around the earth. Those currents are powerful and scientists know that harnessing that wind energy would do wonders for our energy situation all over the planet. These currents govern the weather patterns and how we are affected by them. Windmills harnessed the power of the wind on a small scale and to see wind energy work for all of us, we need to step up the game.
The wind can be converted into a usable form of energy much like the sun’s rays. By using equipment to draw in those winds, our dependence on fossil fuels can be decreased. The percentage of decrease is small right now, but with energy companies on board to push the issue of viable alternative energy sources, wind energy can take on a bigger role.
How is Wind Energy Produced?
Harnessing the energy of the wind requires the right equipment. The wind turbine is the equipment of choice and it is composed of:
Rotor with Three Blades (looks like a propeller)
Shaft
Generator
Tower
A wind turbine is the main piece of equipment. We’ve all seen them on the side of the road somewhere. These wind turbines are used to power irrigation systems for large farms.
Wind turbines have large blades. Most wind turbines have three blades to establish a good balance within the rotor. The blades are attached to the rotor. The rotor is attached to the shaft so that the blades can turn easily and noiselessly when the wind hits them.
All of these components are mounted on a tower. The tower can be a metal pole or one of those triangular towers you sometimes see with receivers on the top of them. What is important about the tower is the height of it. Windmills only stood a few feet higher than the house they supplied energy to. But, to garner the most powerful wind, today’s wind turbines stand hundreds of feet in the air.
The wind energy powers a generator that turns that energy into electricity that can be used to power a variety of items. The wind blows at different speeds on different days, but excess energy can be collected for use on windless days when electricity will still be needed.

Homes can use wind power to supplement their energy consumption needs even if they want to. By constructing a wind turbine or purchasing one, the power of the wind can lower energy bills and gradually wean us off of fossil fuels.
