Windmills have been around for centuries. Their energy was used to operate different equipment on farms. Now windmills have gone high tech to turn wind energy into electricity.

You know what windmills are. They were those wooden towers that reminded you of a large Trojan horse. The blades were made of wood with cloth sails covering them. As the wind turned the sails, whatever was hooked to the rotor would turn. It could be a bucket that was retrieving water from a well or a contraption to grind grain.

Electricity windmills resemble the windmills of old in basic design but that’s about it. The sails have disappeared but the blades are still there. Made of more durable material like PVC pipe, electricity windmills are still working on farms but have expanded their usefulness.
That same kinetic energy that pumped water now powers homes and farms with electricity. The rotor blades are much thinner and more streamlined than before. The blades are connected to a DC motor that converts the wind energy into electrical energy that is then transferred to the residence or farm where it’s being used.
Windmills stand taller these days. Electricity windmills may rise as much as 100 feet in the air to take advantage of more stable winds. All the necessary wiring is contained in the tower.
Companies invest in windmill farms as a way to take advantage of a renewable form of energy for their operations. In areas where it is cost effective, windmill farms do quite well.
Will There Be Wind Today
Windmills used to produce electricity face the same challenges as in the olden days. What if there is no wind? In that event, farmers would have to use elbow grease to get their water.
We have the advantage of batteries to help us out now. Winds are variable even at higher altitudes. Whenever the wind doesn’t blow strong enough or at all, generating power can be a problem. Fortunately, use of a battery when winds are strong saves excess electricity until it is needed. Battery backup for electricity windmills is recommended in remote areas.
One disadvantage of using wind energy is finding a suitable place for windmill generators. The winds may not be strong enough in the area where you need them and building one wouldn’t be cost effective. Winds do stop and that can lead to a lull in power.
