Creating Electricity from Wind Generators

It’s hardly surprising that the world’s population is searching for renewable energy when one considers the fact that fossil fuels are running out. Currently, one form of renewable energy which is receiving a lot of press is wind energy.

Slowly but surely, homeowners from all over the world are realizing that they can generate electricity simply by using the wind. While wind power has been used for centuries, it’s only more recently that people have started harnessing power from the wind in order to power their homes. Essentially, this is done by means of a wind turbine which converts the kinetic energy into regular electricity.

Wind Energy Explained

As the wind blows, whether it’s only a gentle breeze or whether it’s a raging hurricane, energy is created. While we can’t use the energy from a gentle breeze and while a hurricane is more than we need or want, anywhere in between the two, provides an ideal opportunity for harnessing this free renewable energy. Of course, having this ability also enables us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

In essence, a modern wind turbine is no more than an updated windmill with a rotor assembly consisting of three blades. Additionally, a DC motor is housed within a gearbox which is in turn attached to the rotor assembly, thus allowing us to convert kinetic energy into electricity.wind generators

In order for the rotor to be able to catch wind from various directions, it is mounted on a shaft so that it can swivel. As the wind passes through the blades, it forces them to spin, thus creating the kinetic energy which is transferred to the motor. Using magnets, the DC motor then converts this and the end result is electricity.

In systems which incorporate a battery, produced electricity to transferred to the battery via a wiring system. Alternatively, where no battery is used, power travels directly into the home electrical system in order to power lighting and other electrical appliances.

How Much Does it Cost

While certainly not always the case, a wind generating system can cost up to twenty thousand dollars. Added to this, you would also have the cost of hiring earth moving equipment in order to prepare a suitable area for erecting the tower, unless of course, you have access to such equipment yourself.

Alternatively, those who are even marginally capable of carrying out some DIY can easily make their own wind generator for a fraction of the cost. Of course it goes without saying that in order to do this, some dedication is required on your part and you can be rest assured, untold homeowners have successfully created their own systems. For those who have made their own, the systems have long since paid for themselves.

What are the Advantages

Apart from being the ideal solution for those living off the grid in remote areas, the average wind generator is perfectly capable of supplying adequate power for the average size home.

As with solar energy systems, electricity from wind generators can also be stored in backup batteries which can then be used on days when there is little or no wind. Best of all, wind energy is clean, free and renewable.
