Making DIY Solar Cells
Silicon is an important element of a solar cell and must therefore be produced first by preparing the silicon. This can be done by extracting the silicon itself from silicon dioxide by heating it in the furnace that is set to severely high temperatures until all of the purities are eliminated. The silicon must then be crystallized by undergoing another heating process. This heating should be carried out until the silicon melts. Once melted, boron should be added to give the silicon its electrical properties necessary in converting the sunlight into usable energy. Adding boron gives the silicon a positive charge.
A successful process should result to the silicon taking the form of ingots. These ingots are then cut into very thin sheets having a depth of around 200-300 microns. Accuracy is very important in this step and guided computer machinery can handle that.
A negative charge must also be applied by immersing the newly created sheets of silicon into chemical water. An anti-reflection coating must also be added to this step in order for the solar cell to collect as much solar energy as possible. This is why solar cells end up being dark and non-reflective since black absorbs heat best.
In order for the electricity to be conducted properly, silver or aluminum conductors need to be attached to the solar cell. This should finish the creation of a single solar cell.
