Sun + Wind Turbines = Solar Chimney

There is a fascinating experiment taking place in Australia that will use the rays of the sun to power wind turbines which will in turn create electricity. It is being referred to as a “Solar Chimney” and is based on technology first developed in Germany.

Here is how this amazingly simple alternative energy generation system works. First off, the heat is captured from the sun’s rays in the greenhouse of the solar chimney. The heated air then is funneled through a large chimney, but before it escapes it passes through a series of wind turbines.

The whole design is brilliant in its simplicity. Think of an everyday ordinary fireplace. Instead of smoke being bellowed out through the room it is sucked out through the chimney because it has been heated. And as we all know from elementary school, hot air rises.

Suction is created in the form of an updraft by the heated air (think vacuum). The wind turbines are then activated as the hot air passes through them. Electricity is then harnessed from the spinning turbines. What a wonderful, environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

The project in Australia is huge in scale and the first of its kind to be built for commercial use. The dimensions are mind-boggling. The tower itself will be 3000 feet high and 400 feet wide. It is wind-turbinesestimated that the entire project will require 750,000 cubic yards of concrete.

It will have 32 wind turbines (on ground level) with each one having the potential to create 6.25 megawatts of energy. The solar collection point (greenhouse) will have a radius of 3 1/2 miles. That’s a pretty substantial solar power collector system.

The entire project is estimated to be completed in about three years. When finished it will generate enough electricity to supply power to 200,000 residences. That’s the equivalent of a small city. The finished product will emit no gases or pollution of any sort and will be completely environmentally friendly.
