Nuclear Tainted Lighthouses Retooled With Solar Power
153 lighthouses maintained by Russia on both the Berents Sea and the White Sea are now powered by solar panels. But that wasn’t always the case. The lighthouses were nuclear powered with radioactive strontium batteries. Not very environmentally friendly is it?
The project cost about 20 million Euros. Russia and Norway worked together to retrofit the lighthouses to operate on solar power. It took about 7 years to complete. In the year 2009 they may do the same along the Baltic Sea.
We salute the men and women that completed this project. Using a safe, renewable alternative energy resource is a smart move. It is the way we must move forward if we are at all serious about being good stewards of our planet.
